  • We pick you up from your hotel at around 3 pm and take the road towards the Punta Walichu archaeological site, around 8 kilometres away from El Calafate.
The cave paintings are found in extremely beautiful natural surroundings; a geological formation of sedimentary rocks, steppe type vegetation and magnificent views over Lake Argentino, on which it is common to see erratic icebergs blown towards the east by the wind.
We get the chance to appreciate natural overhands and caves used as a site by stone age man to leave their mark, with cave paintings dating back around 4500 years.
It is worth mentioning that these paintings were discovered by Perito Moreno during his expedition to the River Santa Cruz (1877). He gave the place its name of Cerro Punta Walichu.
The interpretation trail is an easy, relaxed stroll lasting from 45 minutes to 1 hour. Fossils, aboriginal arrowheads, tools and photographs of the last Tehuelches to inhabit the region can also be seen during this walk.
We continue our excursion to GLACIARIUM, the Patagonian Ice Field Museum.
Glaciarium, is a modern centre dedicated to providing information about the Patagonian Ice Field. The suggestive architecture is reminiscent of a glacier, full of straight lines and geometrical shapes, inviting visitors to discover this fascinating world. The museum contains large numbers of high quality graphics, photographs and dioramas recreating some of the formations present in glaciers. Visitors can enjoy a three-screen audiovisual show and a spherical projection on the history of our planet.
We take a tour of the major Patagonian glaciers to find out about their details and behaviour.
